Adult Tonsilectomy

Most tonsillectomies are performed on children, but adults frequently need this procedure as well for many of the same reasons, namely, enlarged tonsils that are causing sleep disorders and recurrent chronic tonsillitis. There are certain considerations, however, that are unique to adult patients. Several are listed below. Before you make a decision, discuss the procedure with your physician and follow their instructions about and additional restrictions.

  • Even though you should recover quickly from tonsillectomy, you should be prepared to miss several days to 2 weeks of work.
  • Make sure that a responsible adult is available to drive you home from the hospital after the surgery.
  • Do not drive a vehicle for 2-4 days after surgery.
  • Do not smoke for 2-4 days after surgery.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages for 2 days after surgery.
