How to Check Your Child's Tonsils

To see if they are enlarged or infected, have him stick his tongue out as far as he can, tilt his head back, and say “AHHHHH.” Then, using a small flashlight, look into the back of his throat at the tonsils and adenoids. Enlarged tonsils will appear swollen and larger than normal. Infected tonsils will look red and inflamed, and you may be able to see white or yellowish spots of pus on them. If you feel your child may have enlarged or infected tonsils, call your doctor for an appointment.
