Carboxy-methylcellulose (CMC) is a highly absorbent hydrocolloid-polymer polysaccharide material that forms a gel. When hydrated this gel absorbs up to 20 times its weight in water, making it an excellent material for surgical dressings. These surgical dressings have occlusive properties that promote an environment necessary for healing. Learn more about our surgical dressings and epistaxis products.
Providing Options
CMC technology has been integrated into ArthroCare's epistaxis devices and surgical dressing by carefully controlling solubility. This ensures optimal healing outcomes and therapeutic efficacy.
CMC Woven Fabric- Reinforcing CMC with nylon holds the fabric together and forms a main component of the ArthroCare epistaxis and removable nasal dressing products.
CMC Dissolvable Fibers- Creating fibers of CMC allows the hydrated form to break down and be carried out through normal patient outflow. This technology is incorporated into Sinus Foam dissolvable dressings.
Patients Benefits
Occlusive properties provide a moist environment that promotes epithelialization, which is essential for healing.
Hydrocolloid materials provide a natural bacterial barrier, which prevents initial oxygen contact with the wound site.
Occlusive dressings are less likely to become infected.
Hemostatic benefits promote natural platelet aggregation to control minor bleeding.
CMC Based Products
ArthroCare® offers a variety of dressings that use highly absorbent CMC hydrocolloid material.
