The decision to have a tonsillectomy is up to you and your doctor. By the time you’ve made that decision, make certain that you have all the information you need and have all your questions answered by your physician.

Your physician will provide you with detailed instructions regarding pain medications and diet restrictions in the weeks leading up to surgery. Be sure to tell your doctor if your child has any problems with anesthesia or is taking any medications.

Talk to your child about his or her feelings and fears about the surgery. Spend as much time as you can with your child before the surgery. Reassure them that they will be safe and the doctor is there to help them. It is also a good idea to explain how they will feel after surgery. Let them know that they will have a sore throat, but that there will be medicines that will help them feel better.

It can also be a good idea to take your child on a tour of the hospital to see where the operation will take place and, if possible, to talk to a friend or relative who has had a tonsillectomy.
