What to eat

Your doctor or nurse will provide you with instructions to follow after your child's tonsillectomy, which may include antibiotics and oral rinses for up to 1 week. Some minor pain medication may also be prescribed.

Your child should stay in bed (bed rest) for a few days after surgery. As time goes on, and he or she starts to feel better, it's okay for them to start being more active. General signs that your child is ready to go back to school include eating and drinking normally, stopping pain medications, and sleeping through the night.

When to call your doctor

Contact your doctor immediately if your child has a fever higher than 102°, if he or she urinates less than 2 - 3 times a day or cries without tears, or if you see any bleeding in the back of your child's throat.
