Coblation Soft Palate Reduction

Coblation® Soft Palate Reduction can decrease the incidence of snoring without the discomfort and inconvenience associated with traditional surgery. Coblation Soft Palate reduction is performed with either the ReFlex Ultra® 55 Plasma Wand or the ReFlex CAUP Plasma Wand and can be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes less than fifteen minutes and the patient will experience a reduction in snoring within six weeks.

Studies published in peer-reviewed journals have shown Coblation Soft Palate Reduction to have numerous clinical advantages:

  • Significant improvement in Eppworth Sleepiness Scales at both the 3 and 9.5 month postoperative visits3
  • Significant reduction in snoring reported by both patient and bed partner at 3 and 9.5 month postoperative visits3
  • Significant change in the distance between the tip of the uvula and the bottom of the sella indicating a retraction of the uvula3
  • Minimal patient discomfort
  • Immediate volumetric palatal tissue removal

Less frequent postoperative side effects and complications were found in the RFTVR groups in comparison to the UP3 and LAUP groups. The study concluded that Coblation is a safer and less painful procedure than either UP3 by electrocautery or LAUP for the treatment of primary snoring.

This study found that Coblation soft palate reduction was well tolerated and is an effective minimally invasive alternative for treating patients with habitual snoring.
