There are several common misconceptions about tonsils and tonsillectomies today, and many people are not exactly sure what doctors look for before recommending a tonsillectomy. Here you will find general information about the reasons for tonsillectomy and the symptoms associated with them.

Reasons for tonsillectomy

One common misconception is that tonsils are removed because of tonsillitis or frequent sore throats. While tonsillitis and frequent sore throats can be reasons for a tonsillectomy, usually tonsillectomies are performed to remove tonsils that have become enlarged and are blocking the patient’s airway, making it difficult to breathe and swallow.
